Are they doing it just for fun?

Why do refuse collectors (I still call them dustmen) start so early – what is it about their job that needs them to start work at stupid o’clock in the morning?

It can’t be just because they want or need to finish at two in the afternoon – what’s the point?

Every Monday morning at around 6.10 am I am woken by the dustmen wandering around the street collecting bins in the middle of the road, trundling them from one side of the street to the other and all the time carrying on a conversation – they have to shout to hear themselves over the noise of the bins.

Then it all goes quiet for 10 minutes until the lorry drives up – another group of dustmen jump out and start wheeling the bins again to empty them. These ones have to shout even louder because not only are the bins being wheeled all over the place but now the dustcart is competing with it’s diesel engine thumping away.

Then, just to cap it all, the dustcart starts making what sounds like an 80 point turn with a beeper going all the time it’s reversing.

So, please tell me why they start so early – I really need to know.
