Retirement planning – Las Vegas style

I decided to make my first visit to Vegas last week - one of the liveliest cities in the world with a diversity of activities not seen anywhere else.  It’s such a contrast to my normal quintessential English way of life and, like many others, I wondered if I could win my fortune!

As soon as you get off the flight you run into the first chance to gamble in Las Vegas - the slot machines are right there in the airport. Apparently most books advise against playing them, as they're reported to pay less than casino slots.

Once settled into our hotel we went to explore and could not believe the size of the casino and over the next few days we explored many of the other themed hotels only to find that one casino looks just like another – especially as there is no daylight so it does not matter if you are there at 6.00am or 12.00pm or Midnight. There are no clocks either – presumably to deter gamblers from leaving the casino.

Whatever you want to see in Vegas and there is plenty, your route will take you through a Casino, full of hundreds of flashing, buzzing slot machines – all wishing you to feed your hard earned dollar bills into them.

However, I soon learned that to win a big fortune you need to bet big and this is when it struck home how cautious I really am. I was not prepared to wager large sums of money in the vain hope of hitting the jackpot – the pain of losing money was greater than the dream of winning a fortune.

There were plenty of other people though who seemed to think that by feeding these machines, or playing roulette or black jack they could provide for their retirement. They were there, morning, noon and night hoping against hope for the big win. Unfortunately for the majority it is not going to happen and I came away, having had a fantastic time, sure in the knowledge that good old fashioned saving for retirement is the way forward. Boring I know, but a sure thing!
